Team Building & Challenges

The Confluence Centre has negotiated with a leading supplier of outdoor Team Building, special all inclusive rates for a number of imaginative teamwork challenges. They are all great fun and designed to improve aspects of your teams performance. As part of the activities you get out and about in the area and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Dales.

Before the event you will be contacted by the training consultant to ensure the day is tailored to your team's needs and help to develop key areas where you believe your team is weak. This helps to focus the reviews so they are relevant to your team's current situation and ties the learning into your workplace.

Review Process. After all the outlined challenges, a review is used to gather the learning points together.
Each team prepares a five minute presentation examining the learning from the activity.
Successful teams will have discovered the value of planning, co-operation, efficient use of resources, co-ordination, effective systems of review, communication, time and money management and commitment, when faced with a seemingly complex problem. This will provide a shared common experience of working in a high performance team and give a valuable insight into the way teams and leaders function in such an environment. These themes will be explored further in a subsequent review process.

Circuit of Team Building Excercises.(Team performance learing, analysis & improvement)

climb1.jpg (9779 bytes) Working in two teams, the groups complete a circuit of short tasks outside. Each task isolates and highlights a different facet of team working, such as, decision making, planning, team roles and communication. At the end of each task the team discuss their performance and identify the areas in which they performed well, the areas in which they did not perform so well and how they can perform better.
At the end of the session, both teams join in an indoor session to compare experiences. A planning model is introduced together with an analysis of the role requirements within a team. The lessons from the session are summarised and related to the team's performance on a day to day level. Areas where performance could be improved are identified.

 Cash Collection (Strategy, Review, Motivation.)

picnic.jpg (145657 bytes)   This half day task is a treasure hunt where participants travel in cars and by foot. The aim of the exercise is to accumulate the maximum possible amount of money. This is done by solving cryptic clues that refer to places on a map of the local area.
Contained in their starter pack the teams will find cash, maps and some cryptic clues. The clues relate to locations on the map where a coded card has been placed. Identifying the location, finding the card and passing on the code to the banker/controller, earns more money and further clues. This task is could be combined with Royal Tournament, or a series of outdoor teamwork exercises for the other half of the day.

The Royal Tournament (internal customers/suppliers, problem-solving.)

climb1.jpg (9779 bytes) Royal Tournament is a design and build project where water must be passed across a series of natural and man-made obstacles before being poured into a float tank. If sufficient water reaches the tank the float will rise connecting an electric circuit which detonates an explosion.
This exercise symbolises a production flow with material arriving at one end of the system and passing through a series of operations and customer/supplier relationships. It forces teams to work together to achieve the overall purpose. It tests co-operation, communication and co-ordination across teams and gives individuals the opportunity to reflect upon how effective these processes are in the work environment.

Manufacturing Excellence (communication, systems, business process.)

picnic.jpg (145657 bytes)   This exercise is a water extraction, storage and distribution function. The objective is to meet 100% of the needs of the local suppliers, but retaining the capacity to deal with any unforseen demands, whilst maximising profit. This will enable the team to gain new customers from their competitors.
To achieve this the team will need to plan each stage of the process and each sub group will need to communicate effectively between each other. The team will need to be split into 6 groups of different sizes each responsible for different parts of the exercise. They will be linked via radio. These groups will be : Extraction, Storage, Distribution, Sales, Directors and Buyers. The exercise will be run within strict financial constraints. The team must build their extraction structure and set up their storage depot. This, together with all other costs must be covered by the sales of the water.

Who Killed Mr Heseltine ? (problem solving, planning.)

picnic.jpg (145657 bytes)   This is a half day murder mystery exercise. The aim of this task is to collect the clues that will enable the teams to solve this murder mystery. The only way that the teams can succeed is through collusion, although they are not directly told this.
Each team receives a starter pack containing the rules of the task. These include a budget and a transport allocation. The pack also contains photographs of where their clues are to be found. The teams need to locate the pictures on the map and then plan their routes and transport usage before commencing if they are to collect sufficient clues to solve the puzzle.

Operation Gold Rush (Planning, resource management.)

picnic.jpg (145657 bytes)   Gold Rush is a two-part information sorting and gathering exercise. The aim of the exercise is to recover gold bars and add value to them. In stage one the teams are given a vast amount of information to sort through. Once they have identified the relevant information it will lead them to the stage two brief. In order to locate the stage two brief the team will need a 6 digit Grid Reference and 2 code letters which indicates the type of location. The digits and code letter will be given by answers to clues that the team will have to solve.
There is an overall budget for the exercise. The stage two Co-ordinator's task will be compromised by the profligate use of resources in stage one. These reources include bikes, maps and vehicles. The exact location of the gold bars will be found in the stage two brief. Within the stage two brief are the locations of the gold bars and an explanation of the refining processes. The refining processes can include problem solving tasks, climbing, abseiling, caving, mountain biking. Before the refining starts the team agree to a target value of the gold they will refine.

Disaster Relief (process improvement, planning, inter-team communication.)

picnic.jpg (145657 bytes)   This is a full day physical, movement and construction task. It looks at process improvement and communication between separate teams. The processes used by the separate teams will be similar and an exchange of ideas will improve both teams performance.
The local area has been hit by a series of major earth tremors. The local infrastructure has been severely damaged. Water supplies are contaminated. Roads and bridges are impassable. Food distribution is impossible. There is a high risk of the spread of typhoid and cholera. There is an urgent need for medical help, medical supplies, uncontaminated water and basic foodstuffs. The teams will need to build rope and scaffold bridges to convey themselves, their equipment, vehicles and the vital supplies that they find through the exercise to a final loading ramp from where the supplies are to be distributed.
